GSE Nordic Region Conference

2011

7-9 June 2011

Stockholm, Sweden

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome
Dear colleague,

The GSE Nordic Region has the pleasure of inviting you to the Nordic Region Conference to be held in Stockholm, Sweden, at the Scandic Hotel Infracity, 7 - 9 June 2011.

The GSE Nordic Region Working Groups are groups of information technology specialists, focusing on IBM software, who meet regularly. The main objective of the groups is to give their members an opportunity to meet, to exchange ideas and experiences, to deepen their knowledge and to broaden their perspective, and in co-operation with IBM to participate in influencing the future of data processing in general and particularly in the IBM software areas covered by the groups. Four of these groups are cooperating to arrange the yearly Region Conference: The CICS, DB2, IMS, and Mainframe Infrastructure Groups.

The conference offers a full view on the enterprise IT landscape. On the back end it focuses on the mainframe as the robust back end of the enterprise IT landscape, especially when using the transactional, database, and infrastructure subsystems including CICS, DB2, IMS, and the WebSphere family of products on the mainframe platform.

Also the ambition of the conference is double: It is not only a deep, technical conference for product specialists in these areas, but also a learning source for application developers, architects, and technically oriented managers who need to update their knowledge on the new features of the mainframe and the WebSphere family of products in order to make best use of it for their companies and organisations.

The conference also invites a number of staff members and students of the
Universities of Stockholm as lecturers and as participants to broaden the scope and the networking opportunities.

The conference language will in general be English. But since this is a user conference, and since the most important aspect of it is users sharing their experiences with each other, you should be prepared for users who might prefer sharing their experiences in their own language.

Please note that GSE is non-profit, membership organisation, and all participants at a GSE conference are expected to come from a GSE member company or organisation or to be an individual member of GSE. If that is not yet the case, however, you can use this possibility to get to know more about GSE and to experience the value of participating at a GSE Nordic Region Conference.

The GSE Nordic Region Conference Steering Committee is looking forward to seeing you in Stockholm.

S125. Automating index optimisation is it even possible

Written by Svenn-Aage Sønderskov on .

by Phil Grainger, COGITO/GdbS (UK)

Audience: DB2DBA, Application Development, Level: Intermediate

Link to the presentation S126. Automating index optimisation is it even possible

One of the key performance tuning "knobs" for a DB2 application is the provision of adequate indexes - or better still, provision of exactly the RIGHT indexes.

The snag is, as DB2 evolves and as the optimiser gets smarter, that set of "right" indexes may change over time. In addition, workload and usage changes of the application itself may also change what is the right indexing strategy.

Of course, it has always been possible to manually determine which indexes are needed (and perhaps which ones are now not helping as much as they should) this approach has the twin disadvantages of requiring highly skilled people to do the analysis and taking an excessive amount of time to do correctly.

This is why there has been a search amongst software vendors for the "holy grail" of an automated index determination solution.

But is this even possible, and if it is, does the resulting answer actually "do the job" or does it just take too long to come to a determination.

So is automatic index evaluation even possible? This presentation looks at the possibilities

Phil has over 20 years experience of DB2, working with almost all versions, including DB2 10 In 2009 and 2010, Phil was honoured by IBM as an Information Champion Currently Phil is running Grainger Database Solutions and working with Cogito, providing DB2 consultancy and product design & development services in support of Cogito?s EZ-DB2 family of SQL and Index performance analysis tools

Audience: Application developer, DB2 DBA, Level: Basic, Intermediate

Link to the presentation S131. DB2 developers guide to optimum Performance

The performance of business-critical applications often depends on SQL queries in the workload. Given the declarative nature of SQL, there is usually more than one way to obtain the same information from DB2. Some of these query variants can be dramatically more (or less) efficient than others. As you develop new applications, it is important to be aware of efficient SQL programming techniques to ensure optimum performance. This session outlines some of thesetechniques and also lists potential pitfalls to avoid.

Adarsh Pannu is a Senior Technical Staff Member on the DB2 for z/OS development team. He has over two decades of experience developing database management systems, primarily focusing on query optimization and execution.

Security is more important than ever. Today?s systems have hundreds of entry points, varying from HTML pages to 3270 screens, from WEB Services to JDBC calls, through operators and appliances. The past decades have already been a struggle to keep things safe. The introduction of virtualization changed the rules and the rise of Cloud computing has completely altered the game. Where does this leave us? We went from a Mainframe platform that was controllable, to an increasingly complex IT Infrastructure where everything is connected, but nothing under control. What are YOU expected to do for your companies and what should YOU expect from the companies who provide the various Cloud services? New games, new rules, new tools. This presentation will give you an overview of the various challenges we are facing and how the industry is responding to them.

Marcel den Hartog is CA's Mainframe Marketing Principal in EMEA. Marcel has 30 years of experience with IBM Mainframes and has presented at many GSE and other external events (both CA and other) on Mainframe Strategy, Solutions and lately about the new rise of the Mainframe in these times of virtualization & consolidation efforts

S432. New Trends in Datamodelling

Written by Svenn-Aage Sønderskov on .

by Lars Rönbäck, Stockholm University

Audience: Architects, DBA's and Application Developers.   Level: Intermediate

Link to the presentation S432. New Trends in Datamodelling

We need to rethink the concept of a data model. We live in a world where the available information changes more rapidly for every day that passes.

This is true both for the content and structure of the information.

On top of that, search requirements are also becoming inherently harder to predict.

In such a turbulent environment, current data models do not stand the test of time. At some point it is simpler to build a new model than to modify the existing one.

We must make it easier to reflect external changes in the model. The model must be flexible and adaptable. Furthermore, when information change we should handle the legacy data without causing any downtime.

Many of these problems are particularly obvious in the field of data warehousing. Some of the effects are:

- Current data warehouses are money sinks, as changes get more and more expensive to implement during its lifetime

- Current data warehouses do not give the desired return of investment, with maintenance constituting most of the total cost of ownership

- Current data warehouses cannot answer the really interesting questions, as they are modeled to answer a predefined set of queries and not ad-hoc searches

- Current data warehouses degenerate and become haphazard collections of tables, due to divergence from the initial modeling methodology

If we are to rethink database modeling, let us also try to do away with some other obstacles. Why is there a non-intuitive step in transforming a conceptual model to a physical one? Why is it difficult to make a generalized object-relational mapping?

In Anchor Modeling, a recent modeling technique, all this has been taken into consideration. Nevertheless, breaking into a scene ruled by old paradigms take time. To speed things up we realized that you need a tool, a free tool, and some new thinking on how you interact with your model. One in which a model is not built to last, but built to change. Only then can it truly last in an ever changing environment.

Lars Rönnbäck is a consultant at Resight, with a degree in mathematics from Uppsala University, who is specializing in customer intelligence. He has been working with some of the largest companies in the Swedish insurance and retail businesses, with ten years experience from the field of Business Intelligence and five years with Anchor Modeling. More precisely, he has been building data warehouses, designing SQL-driven ETL frameworks, and lately worked with customer analysis and data mining

The most powerful document to analyze a problem in a z/OS environment is a dump. Each component running under z/OS provides their own recovery environment and schedules a dump in case of a problem. There are different ways how to capture one. They are taken on demand via command, using the slip command processor or will be taken automatically by the recovery routines. But once captured - what now? What kind of dumps exist and what are the first steps for System Programmers to get a feeling what was the dump written for? This session will show a general overview and seperates dumps into different categories. It will introduce IPCS as a powerful tool to analyze unformatted dumps and will show at different examples, how fast the root of a problem can be determined in the area of Unix System Services using a dump.

Matthias is a zSeries Software Support Specialist focused on z/OS base components and primarily working on defects in the area of the z/OS kernel as well as Unix System Services for the IBM zSeries Systemsupport in Germany. Matthias is working now since 15 years in the area of z/OS SCP (system control program) defect support and since 12 years supporting Unix System Services. Link to presentation S534.

He has over two decades of experience developing database management systems, primarily focusing on query optimization and execution.

by Phil Grainger - Cogito (UK)

Audience: Application Developer, Level: Intermediate

Link to presentation S621. Native XML Support in DB2 for zOS - (Chapter two)

One of the most significant additions to DB2 for z/OS is the ability to both store and manipulate XML documents directly - Last year we saw an overview of XML itself before looking at the SQL extensions provided by DB2 (Chapter one). Chapter Two of the ongoing XML story starts by considering when it is a good idea to consider storing XML data directly in DB2 tables and when it might be more appropriate to shred the XML and store the resulting information as traditional relational data. We will then move on to look at the enhancements DB2 10 has brought to the XML story - including subdocument changes as well as strong enforcement of XML schemas.

Phil has over 20 years experience of DB2, starting work all those years ago in 1987 with DB2 Version 1.2. Since then he has worked with all versions, including DB2 9. From his beginnings as a DB2 DBA for one of the largest users of DB2 at that time in the UK, through his time at PLATINUM technology and including almost 10 years as Senior Principal Product Manager for CAs line of DB2 solutions, Phil has always been a keen supporter of user groups and is a regular speaker at both CA sponsored and independent events, as well as being the CA representative on the European IDUG Planning Committee.

Audience: Application developers, general Interest Level: Basic

Link to presentation S626. The latest technologies for the Enterprise SOA application lifecycle: Introduction

JavaScript, Dojo, Ajax, Web 2.0, REST... How do these technologies relate to one another? How do they relate to Services-Oriented Architecture(SOA)? How does this all fit into "Cloud" and what does it have to do with Enterprise applications written in COBOL and PL/I? How does one develop and maintain these applications? What tools are there to help? If any of these questions are of interest, come to this presentation where we introduce these technologies and describe the importance, advantages and disadvantages of each specific technology and how they affect Enterprise SOA. We will also talk about what open source and vendor tools exist that support developing applications that utilize these technologies and different tiers of run-time configurations. (Firebug, IBM Rational Tools, Dojo toolkit are some of the tools that will be introduced.) [A companion presentation that demonstrates some of these technologies on a concrete example of a SOA COBOL CICS application is available]

Gary Mazo has over 20 years of software development experience. Since joining IBM in 1987, he worked on projects ranging from writing parts of Fortran compiler to development of a graphics library for COBOL, to writing an MS Windows plugin for accessing remote file systems on MVS. Currently, Gary is part of a global team in charge of Enterprise modernization strategy, and its development and implementation in Rational Developer for System z.

Link to presentation S633. Application Performance - Tuning, Trending and Testing

It seems to be a constant battle to ensure that DB2 applications are running at their optimum efficiency and speed, but what are the factors that affect this efficiency. This presentation looks briefly at those aspects of application coding, development and execution that have a bearing on the overall performance. But what if it?s really not the applications fault? How do you determine, before embarking on lengthy analysis, that the problem really IS one you can fix from a DB2 perspective. We?ll also look at why it is important to build a performance database that easily allows comparisons between ?now? and ?then?. The performance database can also prove invaluable in determining trends in performance ? perhaps even allowing problems to be highlighted and resolved BEFORE they cause major impacts

Phil has over 20 years experience of DB2, starting work all those years ago in 1987 with DB2 Version 1.2. Since then he has worked with all versions, including DB2 9. Level: Intermediate

Link to presentation S632. Putting it all together: Enterprise SOA applications, a practical approach

In this presentation we will talk about practical experiences for making SOA possible in COBOL and CICS applications. We will describe how to turn a COBOL application into a first class participant in an SOA environment. In a concrete example and a demo of both development and run-time we will walk through enabling a COBOL application as a service. We will introduce a concept of a RESTful interface that has gained popularity as a light weight service interface for enabling an rapidly increasing number of composite applications. We will use the recently released CICS resources for service enablement (for instance, ATOMSERVICE) as an example of turning the COBOL application into a RESTful service. We will also use a Dojo-based library to outfit the RESTful COBOL CICS application with a "Web UI"-look-and-feel graphical user interface.

Gary Mazo has over 20 years of software development experience. Since joining IBM in 1987, he worked on projects ranging from writing parts of Fortran compiler to development of a graphics library for COBOL, to writing an MS Windows plugin for accessing remote file systems on MVS.
